True vs. Truth

The difference between good and great

  • Good is something anyone can recognize in any situation, covers a lot of ground
  • Great is a higher water mark for performance
  • Best – stands alone
  • “Good to Great” can be for anyone or any company
  • At Onewater Marine, our goal is to advance from great to best
  • We want everyone to go from good to great, but we will always strive to be the best
  • Best is what separates us from the rest; BEST is defined by the culture we choose to create
  • The culture we choose to create is derived from the choices we make

Cultures can be one of two things

  • Create opportunities and loyalty or create helplessness and victimhood
  • We can choose to fit into that culture or we can choose to create a different culture

So how do we choose our culture?

  • Determined by the choices we make over time.
  • Acting on something or not acting on something will both produce results.
  • Results over time, become who we are, how we see ourselves and how our customers and potential customers see us.

What is true and what is the truth?

  • People look for answers (what is true) to whatever they are trying to solve for.
  • Once they reach an answer, they will typically cancel their search for whatever else could be found.
  • They may have found an answer but they likely haven’t found the answer
  • An answer produces good to great results.
    • People accept that because it is logical and by default accept the answer.  To get from great to best, we need the answer.
  • The answer will take great results to the best results.

Making “good choices”

  • We have learned that the choices we make determine our future.  This is true.
  • We know that when you make good choices good things can happen, however, this isn’t the truth.
  • The truth is our thoughts determine our choices which determine our future.

So how do we make good choices?

  • Start with our thoughts.
  • Decide what we listen to, watch, read, and we decide who we surround ourselves with.
  • Deciding what you do not listen to, read, watch and surround yourself with will also influence your thoughts.
  • Our thoughts determine our choices.
  • Our choices determine our future.
  • Our results will determine our culture.
  • What you are thinking is the foundation of the culture you want to create.
  • Consider the ways in which you choose to think.

Andy ended the conversation with an example of what is true and what is the truth.

TRUE: You need a parachute to skydive.  TRUTH: You only need a parachute to skydive twice
