HE TRUTH ABOUT CHANGE
What is the biggest challenge an organization faces?
Change.
- Based on conversations people have about change, one would think its complicated.
- But the concept is not complicated so why is it so hard?
- Because it’s a constant reality.
- Change is part of everything we do everyday.
- Grew up, got engaged, got married, had children – things always change.
- Not a single word can describe the power change has over us
THREE BELIEFS ABOUT CHANGE – These are so engrained in us, that they play a role in everything. We treat them like they are principles, they dictate what we accept as possible or not possible. What are the odds that all 3 are wrong?
- It takes time to change - it’s a process and takes a long time. NO – it happens in a heartbeat. May take time to prepare or decide to change but true change happens in an instant.
- A person has to want to change – most of us believe a deep desire is needed for true and lasting change. Think about the times when everything was going fine and in a moment, you received new info and it instantly changed your direction and you never looked back. Until that moment you didn’t even know a change was on the horizon.
- A person won’t change until they hit rock bottom. The deep desire doesn’t happen until they hit rock bottom. This is inaccurate. People change in an instant. What pieces need to be in place for that to happen?
- What’s in it for me? Normal self-preservation is to go through that thought process. Change wont’ happen unless this occurs and there is a gain.
- Proof beyond a reasonable doubt. - Proof is an essential part of change because it aligns with the truth. Proof shows that what you previously believed is incorrect. Doesn’t have to meet the standards of math – needs to be proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Changes your thinking.
Change can be navigated with precision when you define “what’s in it for them” and provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt. They have to believe “this just makes sense and it has something in it for them”
Change is a little thing with big ramifications. Change is not the enemy, doesn’t need to confuse or bewilder you. Change can be medium of peace and harmony. You do not need to fear change. Always remember, people go negative with change but the greatest things that have every happened have all happened because something has changed.
