Seeking Wisdom Part III

Ability to see into the future the consequences of your choices in the present. Allows us to make good choices in the present and avoid consequences

  1. Who influences you – Build a board of Directors
  2. READ – Fiction and Non-Fiction, learn from other people’s experiences
    • There is a kind of book that combines both – biographies of lives well lived
    • Reading conclusions from their life
    • Can relate certain events and decisions to your own life

Third way of intentionally seeking wisdom: Serving Others First

  • Find a way to help another human being
  • A wise person will cultivate a person’s spirit – looking for something he or she can do to help others
  • Buckminster Fuller – lost everything, wondered what would happen if he believed his life belonged to others. What can I do for others?
    • What would become of a life of service?
    • Spent 54 years asking this question before doing anything, does what I do serve others?
    • Began to figure out how to present himself and his ideas to other people
    • He began to prove that his wackiest ideas proved successful
    • Offered patents, authored books, design and architect awards
    • Came up with the idea on how to create an athletic dome
    • Went from bankrupt and suicidal to circling the globe 57 times giving speeches and lectures regarding his work
  • Do battle with the of the obstacles in your present and you will unlock the advantages of your future
    • How?  People do things normally, this takes time
    • When facing an obstacle, you can count of your competition to do everything that’s in their face to resolve
    • OWM, as we look to serve other people in some way, to create value for other people, we will create our advantages in the future
    • The person who serves the most, gets promoted the fastest
      • Doing your job and meeting your deadlines aren’t always enough to get yourself promoted.  – Become more valuable – be wiser
      • Serving others, helping, solving problems for other people
      • Daryl – has the answers, knows what he is doing, gets things done. If you come to him from another department or a problem outside of his job, he won’t help. His is well known, but not a go-to guy.  Not flexible, adaptable, only good at his job.  Not an option for special projects, etc.
      • Michelle – has started as a client relations mgr., always communicating, seemed kind of annoying with the constant communication. But when you asked her for help, she was there or lead you in the right direction.  Had excellent follow-up, things got done in a timely manner. Got things done but also always willing to help.  Made clients happier and raving fans.  When an exec mentions she is looking to changes roles, everyone has something to offer her. Take the opportunity to help others even when its outside of your role.
  • Look for places to serve and you will see results
  • When you develop a positive personal reputation you will see positive outcomes, others will notice and put in in a position to take your pick of opportunities
  • Some may be experienced in these principles; others may have no experience.
    • OMW is building a culture in which everyone leans and everyone is nourished.
